Ballet (Any Style)
Ballet (original)
A general ballet method using academic ballet technique. Neoclassical ballet style is sometimes included in this category. Neoclassical ballet style uses traditional ballet technique but in a less strict way. For example - different and innovative use of the port de bras, strong use of off-balance movements and positions, or a more modern upper body movement with a very strong classical use of the leg line. In the Mini category, variations can be slightly simplified to suit the children's technical level . * It is highly recommended to choose age-appropriate variations in the Mini category
Ballet (Repetoire)
Ballet (Repertoire)
Pieces that are recognized as ballet repertoire (variations, etc.). Mini-repertoire solos allow for slightly simplified variations to suit the skill level of the children . * It is strictly prohibited to use protected original choreography unless the dance teacher sends DWC a letter of permission from the designated organization. This includes works by Balanchine, Lacotte, Matt Eck, and other choreographers who require official permission to dance in competition.

Acro
ACRO: A routine that combines acrobatic elements/tricks with any style of dance, transitioning smoothly between the two. Acrobatic elements may include walkovers, backovers, balance (hands, head, forearms, chest), splits, aerials (side, front), gymnastic work such as back handsprings, contortion, flexibility work, balance work, and tumbling work. Duet/trio, small group, and large group numbers should also incorporate partner work and group tricks into the routine. Dancers must demonstrate complete control of their bodies and tricks.
Lyrical
lyrical
Lyrical dance is a dance style that combines elements of ballet and modern dance. Lyrical dancers express strong emotions such as love, joy, and romance through their movements. They often dance to music with lyrics, which inspire the dancer's movements and expressions. Lyrical dance movements are characterized by fluidity and grace, flowing seamlessly from one movement to another. Leaps are high, and spins are fluid and continuous.
Jazz Dance
Jazz Dance There are many ways to express jazz, but the following is a guideline.
All jazz dance works must be creative expressions that clearly understand and are inspired by the various genres and styles that fall under the jazz dance umbrella.
Other dance forms and styles must not override the elements and techniques required for jazz dance. The techniques in this genre are very clearly described and are necessary for fair and honest judging.
Please note: Acrobatic dance and gymnastics skills are not a substitute for jazz technique and choreography. When choreography uses acrobatic elements, the acrobatic movements must be integral to the main delivery of the jazz choreography and have a genuine connection to the dance story and composition.
Jazz music forms an important part of jazz choreography. Choosing the right music naturally reinforces the elements of jazz dance and also helps to understand musicality, syncopation, dynamics and provides an overall visual for the choreography.
Broadway/West End Jazz Dance Style
The dance technique and style should be indicative of the jazz genre. It should be inspired by, but not exactly copy, famous Broadway shows or dance musicals of the past or present. Examples include: Chicago, Pajama Game, Sweet Charity, All That Jazz, West Side Story, and more recent shows such as: In the Heights, Flash Dance, Chorus Line, Motown, Memphis, The Lion King, Dream Girls, An American in Paris, 42nd Street, Five Guys Named Mo, Sister Act, An American in Paris. The genre is home to many inspiring choreographers, such as Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins.
Lyrical Jazz Dance
This is a style of jazz choreography that is more emotionally engaging and immersive than jazz music. The elements and expression of lyrical jazz are a fusion between the dancer and the creative content of the music. Jazz dance technique is the primary source of choreographic creativity. Lyrical jazz is not about dancing to song lyrics, nor is it about using contemporary dance styles, techniques, or performances.
Jazz is full of emotionally rich, slow-tempo pieces that provide a wonderful platform and canvas for creating original lyrical jazz dance, both solo and in groups.
Afro jazz dance
It incorporates African aesthetics into jazz dance traditions.
The music selected for the choreography must reflect the true expression and appropriate technical elements of Afro-Jazz dance.
Afro-jazz dance can easily represent the more dramatic, dynamic, and stylized choreography of jazz dance, and can express the Afro-jazz aesthetic in performance.
Show Dance
Contemporary
contemporary
Contemporary dance is a well-established and recognized dance style and technique based on the expression of choreographers such as Graham, Limon, Cunningham, Ailey, and, increasingly, Wayne McGregor and Rambert. Contemporary dance classes must incorporate and convey a collection of methods and techniques grounded in ballet, modern, and postmodern dance techniques. Contemporary dance allows for a broader range of movement that does not adhere to the strict body lines of classical ballet. Dance images, ideas, and emotions can be expressed in accompaniment to a variety of sounds, from music to spoken word, or even silently, as long as they are in line with the dance's theme. Choreography must tell a story based on text or song, and in some cases, a storyline must convey emotion or specific expression. Dancers performing in contemporary dance classes must possess a high level of understanding of the physicality and technique necessary to be viewed and judged fairly.
Note: Contemporary dance should not be confused with lyrical dance. The elements required in contemporary dance classes must be visible in the dance creation and technique of the performing dancers.
Tap

Street Dance
Street dance
Street dance encompasses a variety of styles that originated in the United States and have now crossed over with more mainstream commercial dance styles to become an international and popular dance expression of youth culture. This class requires students to not only express a specific dance style, but also to provide an overall concept, theme, and direction that expresses creative ideas, skillful dance imagery, and stylized choreography. For reference, street dance styles include: hip hop, breaking, popping, locking, krumping, and turfing.
New styles of hip hop include: lyrical, jazz, and commercial fusion.
Please note: Music for this class should not include swearing, guns, or death. Choreography and visuals must be appropriate for the overall age group of the competitors.
Commercial
commercial
Commercial dance encompasses a wide range of styles, including jazz, hip hop, and contemporary. It's the type of dance you see in music videos, advertising campaigns, television shows like MTV, and movies.
National & Folklore
Folk dances represent the typical dance style of a particular country or region.
The music used in the performance must be relevant to the country. The music should be national/folk music that represents the typical musical sound of that country.
Because the National Classes involve a variety of countries, there is no grading for the authenticity of the dance.
